I can’t believe that I have been running this blog for 4 months now and have not yet posted a Toots and the Maytals track. Operating slightly outside the mainstream roots scene of Jamaican music, the output of the ska, rocksteady and reggae group, from the early ska days all the way through the 1970s was consistently astounding. This track, released in 1970 is particularly notable- indeed the genius of the song is hinted at through the sheer amount of covers- over 20 different versions of the song have been recorded, most notably by the Specials. None can hold a candle up to the original though, which bears the classic hallmarks of all of the Maytals’ best tunes- upbeat, universal and lively. It also sounded incredible when played live by the band last year. Tunes such as this help explain the global appeal of Toots and the Maytals, who have a level of international stardom almost unmatched in reggae music.
